Hey Everyone -

Question

We just purchased a home in November. We have a nice-sized backyard, however we have that neighbor behind us who doesn't enjoy maintaining their home. I would love to put up some trees along our back boundaries to add a little privacy I was thinking Blue Spruce, as they seem from my research to be hardy and attractive - but is that a good choice? What do you recommend as separator trees? Thanks in advance!

It depends, how tall is too tall? How wide is too wide? How much sun would the tree get? How much room do you have to use?

Thanks for writing back. I have about 200 feet wide of space to fill. It is a wide open area right now with plenty sunlight. Thanks

Well you could go with Blue Spruce, but I personally prefer Norway Spruce, they, in my opinion, are more graceful looking and can get a lot bigger and cover more area.

They establish better too. Blue spruce are hardy once established but they don't like being moved to well so they sometimes die in protest to being moved. If it is just one or two, you could take a chance at babying it until it's established or replacing it if it doesn't. But in a row, you might get one or two to make it and on or two that don't. Then you have to try and replace the ones that don't with ones that match the ones do. Not an easy thing to accomplish.

One problem to keep in mind with spruce, is the plethora of both needles and when the trees get older all of the cones you will have to deal with.
Arborvitae, or sky rocket Juniper might be another option.
