I am almost done with some birdhouses and my question is...Do the houses have to be high, low or in a specific place for the birds to notice them? I am hoping to attract larger birds. I have tons of the small ones already and they have taken up home in my bushes. Is it really idea to place them in a tree or out in the open as I have seen so many before. I see houses in trees and out of them. Do the majority of larger birds really fly south for the winter?

The only luck that we ever had with birdhouses were the two decorative ceramic ones that we have hanging on the porch. The Carolina wrens like those. We have two bluebird boxes that we have had success with. They have to be a certain height and face a certain direction, but I don't remember all the specifics of that.
The birdhouses that my hubby built and nailed to the trees on the edge of the woods just attracted squirrels.

I was thinking that...the birdhouses I put together will probaly end up squirrel beaten up. That's alright I guess...the birdhouses were given to me free, I just painted them and I guess I will just put them up for basically decorations only. Would you happen to know what "nesting pockets" are for? They look like little tiki huts, kinda round and they look to be made of some hay/straw material. DO you know what bird that thing is suppose to nest?
