Hi, long time gardener here.

I was raised gardening and farming here in Kentucky.

I only fool with vegetable and fruit gardening. A little bit of permaculture. All organically done.

I've refined my methods a lot to be more self-sufficient. So much so that I started a Self Sufficient Gardener podcast. Its currently up on Itunes. I don't have much traffic yet, I really could use help with content ideas. I'm not very good at this but it is fun.

Anyway, hello!

Welcome from Western KY! Scroll down through the forums and pop into The Kitchen Garden ~ there are Fruits and Vegetables forums there. I'm sure they could use your input. Do you grow kiwis??

Hello all and thanks for the welcome.

@KeeWee, I actually just bought some land in Murray not too long ago. I haven't tried Kiwis yet. I understand that they actually grow pretty well here. I just can't get over the idea of having to have a male plant and a female plant. I tried groundcherries this year for the first time and I was surprised. They nearly took over my whole garden. Huckleberries are on the agenda for next spring.

Growing some salad greens, carrots and peas right now. Got my floating row cover ready for the colder weather. Hope to do a show on row covers and coldframes soon.

Take call all.

Hey, wow ~ small world!! I work in Murray, but actually live in between Murray and Benton. The reason I asked about the kiwis is that I planted two last year (m & f) and now I see the leaves are turning yellow and dropping, just like other deciduous plants right now. Just wondered if that is the normal fall procedure for these plants.
Hmmmm ~ ground cherries, not familiar. I started some blueberry bushes this year and am babying them along.

It certainly is a small world. Parents live in Benton.

I have no experience with Kiwis, did you get much fruit this year?

Yeah the groundcherries are neat. I've got tons of seeds that I can send out to anyone that wants to try them.

Just got back from Benton! Had to make the rounds of the junk shops

I did not get fruit from the kiwis the first year, but didn't really expect it either. The female vine had some flowers and I guess I was really thrilled to see those. I have seen kiwi vines get massive and right now I have mine planted at the bases of two dead trees. I told my husband that eventually we will need more support (they grew 12' or more in just one year). He is pretty handy so I am sure he will come up with something before the dead trees give way.

I looked up the ground cherries on the internet and I would like to try them. It looks like they are grown as an annual unless you live in Z9 or higher ~ that ain't us! Do you plan to save seeds year to year so you can start them again each spring?
