I have some perennials in containers. If left in containers outside over winter will they come back? I live southeast part of WI.gracee |

It would depend on what the plant is and how cold your winters are. Some plants can take it and some cannot. Would you like to tell us what the plants are specifically? |

I know that rudbekias are pretty tough. I have a few that volunteered in one of my pots and the winter didn't get them last year. Of course, my winters may not be as severe as yours. They died back to the ground, but popped back out in the spring. If your daisies are shastas, they are pretty tough too. If you can, maybe you can find a sheltered corner under some bushes or something and put them there for the winter to give them a bit of protection. That's just my experience. Perhaps someone more familiar with your winters will say just the opposite. |

I can only tell you about how daisies and black-eyed-susans or rudbeckias do in my zone----which is 6. Both of these perennials come back every year with no problems---they are pretty hardy here. mitzi |

Not sure of your zone.......but remember a perennial in the ground over winter is different than in a pot over winter....I think it would do better in the ground if the winter is very cold. I do not put my perennials in containers unless I do not plan to plant them.......my exception was a hyssop...my first year and I bought it more as an annual. When I realized it was a perennial.....I did put it in the garden area this early fall........we will see if it is zone 4 hardy next spring....I rather doubt it........but who knows? Birdie |

thanks everyone. I am in zone 5. I will let my friend know she will have to take a chance. I gave her some of my plants & she doesn't want to take the time to plant them in the ground. even though the reason I gave them to her was they come back every yr. she isn't a gardener she just likes the fact they are pretty, doesn't want the work. Oh well guess when I decide to divide again she won't be getting anymore of my plants. ha ha. |

I started several pots for my patio - kniphofia, hosta, perennial veronica - all I do is put them in a sheltered spot (the bottom of my bilco door) and they have come back in zone 5. |
