Well at least for us anyway. We still have plenty of hummers, but days are getting shorter, nights are getting colder ~ won't be long now. Last view date in 2008 was 10/21 (yes, I keep track, I am so lame). So we will be lucky to eke out a couple more weeks. It's a l-o-n-g six months with no hummers, especially now that my doggies are gone

We still have a few and they are busy reving up for their long flight. They are just such a joy during the summer. |

I only have 4 or 5 now, way down from the 15 or so I had. Usually by mid-October we only have the natives that stay.

No, you're not lame, Key. I think that is what we agreed to do this year--keep track of the leave-date. I'm still watching mine. The other day there was one on the feeder fat as a pig! I have never seen one so plump. I guess I never really looked at them much in October because I never thought about keeping track in October. I didn't see one yesterday, so right now my leave-date would be October 7. If I see one today, then it will change, won't it? |

Yes!! I noticed the SAME thing ~ some of them SO fat. Never noticed this before. And yes again ~ that's the way I do it. If a day goes by where I don't see one, I mark it as "last". Unless I see another one later in the week ~ then I start all over again

I've had a female hummer using my feeder for the last eight days. The last couple days a juvie male has stopped by as well. This is my first year attracting hummers so I don't know our typical last-hummer date. The weather has been very cold this month and it will only get colder. Tonight we'll get our first freezing temp and tomorrow night we'll get a hard freeze with a temp in the low 20s. The normal high is still well into the 60s, but for the next 1-2 weeks it looks like 40s and 50s is the best we'll do. |

Yes ~ it has become unseasonably cool here too. Nights in the 40's and days struggling into the 60's. Normally we would be ten degrees higher than that. I have noticed the remaining hummers (around six or so) have been drinking too much and then having trouble flying. We found two on the porch yesterday and managed to hold them and help them get "lift-off". Probably born this year ~ first migration. |

It got really warm yesterday and I did not see a hummer while I was sitting. They may be gone from here as well since we got pretty cool on Wednesday early morning. |

Had a surprise snow from Nebraska to Iowa this morning following our first freeze. I still had a young male hummer coming to the feeder while the yard and feeder were turning white. I'm sure this was the hummer's first encounter with snow. Maybe he initially thought it was millions of tasty white insects. He was doing a lot of looking up and around while the flakes fell.

I'm glad that you had some success this year! I haven't seen a hummer since Oct. 9. I'll be keeping my eye out for any stragglers, though. The feeders have been cleaned and refreshed, just in case. |
