Is This in the Mint Family?

This is growing thick in one of my beds, it is about three ft tall and very thick. When the leaves are crushed they smell like a lemon. The humming birds love it.

That looks a lot like a plant I just googled, except mine had purple leaves too. I found out that what I had was called Perilla. Maybe the same as what you have...?

John, if it is a mint it will have velvety leaves and square stems if that helps.

He said they smell like lemon-so catnip is w a a y off. I don't know what pineapple sage smells like-but I'm betting Lemon Balm.

There is such a thing as lemon catnip. I am not sure how much cat's would like it though, since citrus is not a smell they enjoy. I do not know it this is it and I have not grown it personally to see if it would have those skunky background notes.

Green Perilla??
Known sometimes as Beefsteak Plant in English, but also by its Japanese name of Shiso, it is a member of the mint family. There are 2 species of shiso, green, and red.
