This is for all of us that are trying to change the way we eat and live our lives.

Get rid of the bad habits and put in place good ones.

A couple of years ago I was very successful using a local weight loss program. Then my DH has a mild stoke and is having dementia problems. Since frustration is one of the big triggers in my eating habits, I have gained part of the weight back.

This week I have started again, this time on my own.

I know I have been trying to eat healthier but boy is it expensive. I have been exercising MORE this summer and I haven't lost many pounds but have lost some size so I am converting some fat to muscle. My concern is going to be to be able to continue my exercise thru the winter. Maybe you guys can help keep me motivated.

Building muscle is good but I have learned the hard way - quit excercise - and find the fat again. I have done this several times over the years. I really miss the water aerobics.

Linda, I am so glad you started this! It had occured to me to start a thread on it. Here is my saga:
2 weeks ago me and Blooming gardener (Misty) decided to make a move toward "feeling better". We dont call it a diet. I am doing it to try to save my bones. Each week we make a reasonable goal. I will tell you my goals.
Week 1-cut out chips and little debbie snacks. Exercise daily for 10 minutes. Did that and gained 2 lbs.
Week 2- Increase exercise time by 5 minutes and cut down on butter.
We weigh again Friday. This week I am walking 30 minutes daily and cutting down on over all fat consumption. I take prednison so weight loss will be slow and hard, but I am determined. And it's not just about wt loss for me, it's about feeling better in general.
Let's go girls!! We can do it!!

You have all made some good points and I say ..... count me in! Your good points lead me to this conclusion ~ what works? Answer: everything. It occurs to me that no ONE THING is the correct way to maintain a halfway decent livable weight for your frame size and to feel pretty darn good in the bargain.
As for me, I have been exercising in some form or other (with a few breaks here and there) since I left highschool (yeah, ok ~ in 1972 if you MUST know). The problem with exercise is that it requires repetition which = boring. Then I found Jazzercise = NOT boring. Then we moved to KY = NO Jazzercise. So after twenty years of fun, now I walk. I try to go every day, rain or shine. Even if I only have 25 minutes, I take the 3# weights and go. To feel better and maintain weight, just DO it. Three times a week only maintains your current weight so more than three times is required ~ sorry.
Diet ~ I don't. I hate forced diets, but I DO watch and think about what I eat. It's hard at work because they insist on keeping junk food around but I keep apples, nuts, and veggies there to deter me from the chips and candy. Oh, and NO fast food ~ ever. As much as I ADORE french fries, I keep this kind of eating at the barest minimum ~ a couple times a year at most. Lately, I have cut down on carbs (my downfall) and replaced them with cheese and nuts ~ sounds bad but it is working ~ down ten pounds this summer.
AND ~ I know some say not to, but I weigh myself every day, and I keep track. As someone else mentioned, yeah ~ you exercise, eat right, gain two pounds. This is exactly what happens, but you will probably see a different number the following week ~ don't give up.
OK ~ so more than my two cents worth, but bottom line is not so much about weight, but overall sense of health and well-being. It's harder as you get older, too ~ make no mistake. I may be down ten pounds, but it's tough to tell where it came off ~ back of the knees perhaps?

I need this!! 2 years ago I lost a pet, and rode my bicycle every day for almost an hour scouring the neighborhoods and lost 25 lbs. in 2 months. Of course, I was heart sick, too, and didn't eat much-but I dropped that weight fast. It has slowly crept back-the bike has 2 flats, my bones hurt, and I just feel crappy. If someone would ask me everyday-"Did you walk today?". I might 'just do it'.

I am diabetic and learned a few things. Watch your Carbs! You don't need to cut them out altogether (your body does need them), but learn which ones are good for you-like oatmeal, sweet potatoes, whole grains (I ABHORE wheat bread-it's still the white for me!), tea or flavored water (or plain)-no carbonated beverages(I get heartburn easily, so dropping diet cokes was easy). My main problem is not enough excercise! Somebody-Push ME!

WOW, you ladies are ready and willing to do this. I worked in the yard for 2 hours this morning. Think that is my excercise for the day.

Eating is another thing, it is now time for lunch, protein, veggie and fruit.

Fairy Garden,be sure to drink lots of water. If you gals have any of those BIG water bottles, try to drink two of them a day. Water in is water out.

Snacking in between meals is the hardest thing. We all want those goodies. This week I am using Glucerna twice a day for a snack. Will let you know if that works.

CC ~ yes, you are right ..... IF someone asks, but they WON'T. They don't want to make their own sedentary lifestyle look bad. So here's what I do ~ I make sure I tell someone every day that I walked. I'll say "you know, on my walk this morning, I saw ....." Yeah, maybe it gets old for the recipient but hey, I DID DO IT. I have found this may actually inspire others to get moving just so they don't look bad by comparison.
Oh yes, water ~ if only I didn't then have to spend the rest of the day on the pot (sorry for the visual). Anyone else have this problem? And, I am not EVER thirsty ~ rarely (my Mom is the same way) so I have to MAKE myself drink. But .... cut out that pop ~ regular OR diet. I quit drinking pop a long time ago and never missed it. And diet pop is quite literally poison. If it has no calories, no sugar, no caffiene, no anything ~ well then WHAT is it??
Oh, and Linda ~ gardening IS exercise! On the days that I plan to do HEAVY gardening (moving rocks, digging plants, etc) I do NOT walk. Hard gardening burns more calories than walking anyway.
Listen, you know I think this is so far from wanting to be thin anymore. I just don't want to have to shop for new clothes.

I have heard that Ice water is actually better than room temp water for weight loss. The body has to burn calories to keep itself warm.

Also, if you can handle the sodium, celery is a great diet food. It burns 7 tines the calories that are in it trying to digest it.

Also, bananas are natures uppers and apples are natures downers so keep that in mind when eating snacks.

Another day, another 30 minute walk. Gals, I have to walk INSIDE my house. I make a big loop around the den, hall, living room, dining and kitchen. I turn my favorite music up loud and sing and walk. I am afraid to walk outside because it's so hot and I get tired. What if I wear out away from home and cant make it back?? I will try it when it's cooler.
