I start by gripping the seed with a pair of pliers and laying a 80 grit piece of sand paper flat on the table close to the edge, sand and you will see a second black shell, see the little white ring in the third pic. You have to sand through that shell also until you see the solid white. Stop when it is about the size shown in pic #4.
I then fill a 1 quart jar with water hot enough you can just stand your hand in it. Pic #5 after a day in the water you can see how much the sanded seeds have expanded, compare to unsanded seeds shown on the right. on about the forth day the seeds sprout as in pic #6. I forgot to add that I do change the water every day. After they sprout I keep the jar filled to the top. as you can see in pics #7 & 8 they grow up and out of the water.
Pic #9 is one growing in my pond planted in a pot of clay kitty litter.
And the last pic is what I have not achieved "yet"

And by the way I have never had a hollow seed, nor one that floated.

I truly hope this helps at least one member.

John

Thanks for the info John. It definitely helps alot as I have never seen how a seed supposed to look like when sacrificing. So far all the seeds I have are shriveled up inside the outer shell.

Aaron, I can't imagine why your seeds are that way, because lotus seeds normally remain viable for countless years. Some have been sprouted that were 2000 years old.

Can you tell me where Selangor is?

Looking good, Aaron, I still change the water everyday, and it will start growing real fast. I have been potting mine in clay kitty litter. I also use 1/2 of a indoor plant Jobe fertilizer spike. Keep the clay covered with water.
Good luck and congradulations. Keep us posted on your progress.

Hey John, I have already planted the seed into a pot(diameter-2.2 feet, depth- 1.5 feet). The other photo shows 2 other lotuses(both from the same plant)that my mom's friend gave me about a week or 2 before yours arrived.
