I am new to this site. I live in Missouri. There were surprise lilies growing in my backyard when I moved to this house thirty some years ago. I am sure they need to be separated. Can someone tell me how to separate and what time of year to transplant them.

Thank you,

Early fall is usually a good time to separate old plants - you want to give the roots enough time to get established before winter, that's all. When separating old plants, dig up the patch and gently pull off outer bulbs, or cut with a sharp knife or scissors. Then find new spots to replant bulbs in small clumps. When newly planting or replanting I usually put bone meal or bulb tone into the hole.

I live in southern MO and have dozens of surprise lilies, all from an original 8 bulbs. I've had them over 30 years too, and divided them many times and spread them around, and given them away. You can dig them up any time of the year to transplant and they will do fine. This time of the year is the best time because there is no foliage and you can put your bulbs in and next spring they will come up and do fine. If you wait until there is foliage, the only thing is they probably won't bloom that year due to transplant stress, but if they are watered along I have had them to even bloom the same year.

Are those the lillies that have leaves that die back, then a leafless stem comes up with pink lillies on them? I transplanted some in the spring and tried to keep them watered and they bloomed later. They probably went into a period of shock though. A friend called them---Naked Ladies. mitzi
