Uh-oh ..... I said the vine is not that big, well I lied

I decided to weed around the base and found some runners and I thought "What's this?". Yup, moonflower ~ runner-ing all over and under the porch. When I pulled on those babies, they are over 10' long. Oops. So I wrapped them around the little trellis as best I could ~ now we'll see what happens.

I have GOT to stop letting those wild violets take over as ground cover. Because of them I couldn't see the runners ~ ack.

Haha SURPRISE!!! Maybe it's in kahoots with the violets to sneak up on you.

That is one plant I have had NO luck with at all. I always wanted to grow morning glories and moonflowers together so I would have blooms in the AM and PM, but the moon flowers NEVER showed up. I didn't realize the blooms were so big, that is absolutely gorgeous!

MG ~ moonflowers only come in white, as far as I know. I think you could grow them with a little determination in your zone. You would want to start them early indoors, and probably soak the seeds overnight before planting.

Sarah J ~ many people mention that these are hard to start. I had to start them twice this year as the first attempt literally drowned from all the rain in May.

Oh, I love moonflowers! Yours is gorgeous! I have always had to start them more than once, and I always start several seeds soaking at once to get just one plant to take, but oh, so worth it!

I am in zone 5, I have many of these plants each summer. I believe it came from a start from someone and I have had tons of them since. In fact, I have to thin them out! What I do is just let the seeds fall from the pods each summer and they just come up each year. I do nothing to them. I love this flower but have recently heard that kids are using them for drugs. I may think of removing them from my garden when my kids are older. Until then, I will enjoy them and be the envy of the neighbors! :-)

Wow ~ I am in Z6b and I cannot let the seeds drop and expect to have moonflowers again next year. I have to store the seed and then replant in spring. Perhaps your colder winters allow the seed to overwinter and then sprout in spring. In any case, you are very fortunate!

I'm not sure if C-----? is talking about Moonflower vine or Datura. Some people in different parts of the country call a Datura a Moonflower-and yes, I have heard of kids getting high with some parts of the Datura plant. In fact, a lot of nurseries around here quit carrying Datura for that reason.
