I have been growing purple and yellow cone flowers for a few years and they always grow beautifully - as they are now. I found a new variety that is a reddish orange and decided to plant some in my garden. They were doing fine until recently - the leaves started turning a silver color and are now a black/brown color. I live in Northeastern Pa and our summer has not been normal- low temps and somewhat rainy. A few of my family members who also garden have told me it looks like some type of fungal disease, I want to treat it, but would like to know what it is so I can treat it correctly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will take a photo of the plants tomorrow to post.

I get powedery mildew, and that is what it sounds like your plants got. You can spray with antifungals, but some seasons you just can't seem to beat it.

This doesn't look like powdery mildew - I get it on my Zinnias- this looks different. I've attached some photos.

I don't think that's powedery mildew. Maybe slugs are eating the leaves. My coneflowers are one of the few plants that I'm not having trouble with this year.

I don't think it is powdery mildew - I get it on my zinnias and coreopsis and it looks different (moldy - that you can almost wipe off). The leaves of thess coneflowers almost seem to dry out and crack - they crumble easily in your hand if you rub them. I'm going to try an antifungal to see what happens. Thanks for everyone's help & suggestions.

Powdery mildew can make the leaves brittle and in come cases, the plant gets defoliated.

I'm in West Michigan and i do have the same flower, i think they called it sunset or something like that, anyway... the same happened to my flowers also, just this variety though. Maybe it's something specific with this type of cone. All my other purple cones are just fine. Intresting....
