This morning I went up to the woods with a friend and harvested wild St Johns Wart, and am working on drying it, as well as my Chamomile from my garden.

Im hoping the St Johns wart will help my hubbie this winter with his SAD. He is from Florida so our dark dreary winters in Oregon really affect him. We are also gonna get some special lighting to help this too.

If your husband is taking any kind of medication, it may be best to read up on it and St. John's Wort. A few years ago when I was on anti-depressants, I asked my doctor about it, and he said it does not go well with some medications. I can understand the SAD, thing. I live in Louisiana, and if we have too many days with no sun, I get it, too!!

I echo Carolyn's concerns about herbs and prescription drugs. They can interact badly. When I was taking Lipitor, I couldn't eat grapefruit - a fate worse than death, because I love grapefruit. Apparently grapefruit accelerates the action of the Lipitor. I know grapefruit is not an herb, but there can be similar interactions. A friend of mine who suffers from SAD benefits considerably from the special light she uses. I hope it helps your hubby. It must be a difficult thing to deal with.

He isn't taking anything at all. Every year he gets restless and starts packing to move to a sunnier state.

That is why we are starting with a gentler treatment, along with the lights.

My family doesn't jump into perscrip meds first thing unless absolutely necessary.

I do want to add that Im feeling a tad defensive over this.

I have a feeling that if I said he was getting a prescription of anti depressants folks would chime in to compare drugs.

This defensiveness may be entirely of my own creation, but I cant help but wonder the true pull of the drug companies and the AMA.

I appreciate your concerns and warnings about mixing herbs with anti depressants, but Id be just as concerned if he was taking that stuff by itself and not taking a holistic approach.

Your harvest looks lovely SF! While drying they could be displayed as centerpieces As for the posts above I am sure the warnings were given in sincerity not as insults. I agree that taking a holistic approach first is always best. Often our typical Western Medicine wants to flood the body with synthetic chemicals before trying to restore our bodies to their natural state.

Sister_Fearless oh do tell me if this works. I suffer severely from Seasonal Adjustment Disorder myself. My family MD has also recommended a sun lamp for my face. If I were sitting pretty in money I'd buy a tanning bed and live in it and my skin would look like leather 24/7...lol I am making light of it BUT I know firsthand how this disorder can be paralyzing. When I know the season is about to end, my skin starts to crawl, im not kidding. I stay busy always. Its the sun/warmth that I know my body feels it has to have. Its horrible.

Geez, sister, I wasn't trying to act holier than thou-I don't know if you take meds for high blood pressure, or diabetes or what-thought I was being helpful-Nothing was meant by it. Sorry I stepped on your toes. And, by the way, I DO take meds because they are necessary, NOT because I want to.

I do appreciate your warnings.
Maybe this feeling inst just about your reply it seems a good portion of main stream society jumps has more faith in the multi billion dollar drug companies than anything else.

I feel there is a bigger place for natural healing, herbs, prayer, diet change, and mind set, and lastly synthetic drugs, and conventional medicine.

You definitely overreacted and it sure ticked the coonass in me off. I lost my grandmother, my dad & my Mom within 1 1/2 years of each other, got divorced & was raising a teenage son-Your last remark about the antidepressants and herbs set me off. I also take meds for diabetes and my boss takes meds for high blood pressure. Maybe I should have just chewed on some sort of herb, huh? You could have left the last sentence off! I was just trying to make you aware, I had/have no idea if you or your family was taking any kind of meds. SORRY!! Last post I'll make trying to be nice. And BTW-I wasn't making the comparison with antidepressants-I had asked my doctor about St. John's Wort INSTEAD of the Anti-D. I'd better shut up.GRRRRR
