I know (well, kinda) about the aloe looking one-What is the other called? I need to move these into more sun, and somehow, keep them out of the rain. They're starting to rot! Attachments: ![]() |

The "aloe looking one" is possibly a hawarthia. Yes it needs lots more sun and to be repotted in some dry mix. The other plant is a Crassula ovata Gollum (Gollum or Trumpet Jade). This too need much more sun and its own pot..the water requirments for these 2 plants is differant. The Jade can be watered lightly once a week but the hawarthia I would only water every 2 weeks as it will rot much easier when over watered. Both these plants would do much better planted in a very well draining potting mix of 1 part soil, 1 part pea gravel and 2 parts perilite. When introducing them to more sun give them short times in MORNING sun to start, gradually increasing the time over a 2 week period till they are in full sun. The Jade will darken up and even get a red/maroon tinge to the tips of the leaves. I would check that hawarthia good for rot before you place it into the new pot, pull off anything that is brown or feels soft...then let it dry out for a couple weeks before watering it again. RR |

RR, it was cloudy when I took this picture. In this location they received sun until about noon, then almost total shade. The main problem, is the RAIN!! 2 inches every day for a week! These plants were given to me. I will repot them this evening. Thanks for the tips. |

Yes the rain is definitly a problem, you shold move them were they wont get the rain. But also get them used to full sun so that they get all day sun this will help them also. I can see on the Gollum Jade that it is in much need of more sun. The color should be much darker. The hawarthia looks like it is well rotted through the middle and may not be able to be saved but you can sure try. If you have a very well draining potting mix this will help temendously because even in high rains the water wont sit in the pot, it will drain much faster. That is what saves many succulents during the rains. The whole things is to have a potting mix that water runs through but does not cling to and that will get good air flow. That is why the pea gravel and perilite work so well. RR |

Yep, the Hiawartha (??sp) was rotted all the way through! I am so unhappy! I found 2 little pieces that have a tiny bit of root on them that maybe I can save. While I'm trying to do this, guess what? It's raining. |

So sorry to hear the hawarthia was so bad..it looks like it has pups though and you may be able to save those..even if they dont have roots they can still be saved i can show you how if you discover any pups that are not rotted. Get them out of the rain even if you need to take them indoors for a time. The jade needs to be out of the rain or it will get root rot and die also. It isnt the best for them to be inside but if thats the only way to keep them out of the rain so they can dry out then its better to do so. RR PS. that pretty little pink aloe you just got...please do not leave it out in the rain it will die qickly! |

I've planted the pink aloe in what I call my "succulent" bed. It has hens & chicks in it and drought tolerant plants. I had my son's huge cactus in that bed-it is a lot of sand and rocks. I did take one tiny little piece and potted it in a tiny pot-in bright light, but out of full sun & the rain. I have taken what pieces of the Hiawartha and the jade plant, and put them on paper towels in my garage for the next day or so. |

Well, it's all kaput! I left both out in the garage to dry out for about a week. I repotted both, looked ok. The jade is making it-I noticed today the hawthorne looked to be still rotting around the base, yep, it fell apart and had what looked like little maggots all through the bottom of it! Yuk! |

Well, phooey! I was hoping that you could save them. You didn't lose that pinky, too, did you? |

No, still got the pink one-It is planted in the ground in my "succulent" bed, and I have a tiny, tiny start in a tiny, tiny pot!
