I've been back and forth what to use to make a raised garden bed. If I decided to plant the old-fashioned way directly into the ground does anyone know how long it will take to prep the soil before I can start growing anything? Keep in mind the area has not been disturbed for probably the past 15 years, it's compacted dirt and I'm assuming there is caliche underneath. Also, there has just been all sorts of junk stored on it so who knows what types of chemicals may have leached into the ground. Thanks for any advice. |

the first thing I would do, would be to get the soil tested. Try contacting your local extension office. |

Didn't think about that. I probably should do that so I know exactly what I'm dealing with all around my house. Thanks |

In my opinion do all the above. The thing i find it takes 3 years from bare soil to a productive garden unless your soil is fertile to start with.I built raised beds using soil that wasn't the best but it was close to the beds over time i added lots of composted horse manure , compost etc. The first year the results was OK.Second year much better, the third year the soil and the organic material looked as one. This is my forth year using some of the beds and even with the bad weather production looks great. |
