A response on another site said aphids. I have to agree after looking at the pics. I sprayed with a soap water solution after I cut a lot of the stalks with the infestation away. I'll inspect for the next few days and see how my attack did. Keeping the soap solution handy.

never seen red aphids before but your bugs do look like aphids. boxelder bugs are red too with black markings.

do you have a lot? if not you can wash 'em off with a hose or squish (YUK) them with your fingure. once aphids fall on the ground they can't get back up on the plant. Hope the soap got rid of all of them though.

I gave them a good jet spray after spraying on the soap solution. We got a nice heavy rain last night. I'll check again when I get home tonight and see how they are looking. Hopefully if I keep up the attack they will become extinct!! LOL
I might let the kids put on gloves and start squishing too - not sure I can do that myself....

A master gardener in the area said she wasn't supposed to say it, but Murphy's oil soap and water is good for aphids. It worked on my rose of sharon. Maybe any soap would do or maybe they don't like the smell, taste, or texture of the Murphy's. It may smother them, too.

I don't think that is a box elder bug. Looks soft bodied to me. If so, try what Poe said. According to Ortho's Home Gardener Problem Solver book, a box elder bug is brownish-black about 1/2 inch long with red stripes.

I can't squish 'em either. Yuk! Hows your plant TumbleWeed. Did you get rid of them? I read a long time ago you should check your plants after a good rain 'cause that is when aphids show up. Wind also moves them around.

Ok, so I used multiple tactics and I've been doing a check every few days. First I used that SAFE product. Then I did a good jet spray the next day. Then I bought some ladybugs......
Haven't seen quite the investation again. More bugs in my garden then I've ever had... wish they were bees (they aren't as plentiful as a couple of years ago)

Yeah! looks like you beat the little buggars!

Ladybugs don't stay put in the area you let 'em go. At least this is what I've read about them. Don't waste your money on 'em. The little green flying bugs (forgot what it's called) stay put. I know we've talked about these bugs before, posted somewhere here at the forum.

I noticed (when I HAD tons of Roses ) every time I got rid of aphids, naster uglier bugs used to show up. One year after I kicked out green aphids a black bug took its place. these bugs looked like aphids but they bit!
