I was wondering if anyone here might know why I have leaf lettuce that is growing upwards and taking the shape of a small christmas tree The lettuce tastes just fine and it's nice and full. I have a head of romaine that also appears to be growing upward???? Is my soil to rich? Are they getting too much sun?

Lettuce is a cool weather crop with out seeing the plants it sounds like yours is starting to go to seed . As long as its not bitter i keep using the lettuce. |

I think you're right because there appears to be a flower or seed group at the very top of the plant. My raddishes also ran to seed very quickly. I am a little puzzled however since our summer has been quite cool this year relatively speaking. And isn't lettuce able to be successively planted all throughout the summer? |

Lettuce can be planted in the summer but i find it takes a bit of work keeping it cool and growing. The picture is of my lettuce starting to go to seed but it still isn't bitter. Attachments: ![]() |

I find saving lettuce seed to be quite easy. After the flowers fade away, the plants will eventually form seed heads, which look a lot like miniature dandelion seed heads. Once these seed heads form, remove the whole seed head(s) from the plant before the seeds blow away! You might want to use scissors, as I got my hands pretty sappy while trying to pull off the seed heads! Now, just take the seed heads indoors and pluck the seeds from them. You can also remove the white chaff that lets them get blown around, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Set them on a paper plate to dry, and leave them for at least a week or two. Then, just put them in an envelope, plastic bag, or some other container, and treat them like any other seeds. |

This was my lettuce "tree" in the spring. Tooo hot for lettuce here in the summer. It got about 3-4 ft. tall! The type was "Red Sails". At this point it was very bitter. My first experience with growing lettuce-Easy! Attachments: ![]() |

It made a nice stalk of seed, then it just fell over (lol). I didn't pull it up until I needed it's growing space. If you notice the date on the pic it was in early April. I planted it in December, I think. |
