I live in an old neighborhood and all of the houses have sidewalks in front of their yards, then a strip of grass then the road. I am sick of mowing it and weed wacking it. I called the city to see if there are any restrictions as to what you can do with that. There is none except that you cant cut off visibility to the intersection we live on. So no trees. I have thought about a starch crop like corn or wheat but the wind comes off the bay and whooshes through there consistently. I also need to leave a few paths to load and unload two cars. ANY IDEAS?????? |

Pond pebbles? Or maybe a low growing ground cover? What are the dimensions approximately of the area and what have your neighbors done with their yards? |

The strip is 56" wide and a little over 612" long. I took a pic but I cant find the cord for down loading it on my computer right now. I would like it to be planted with edible or medicinal plants for the most part. I would consider some flower for color and insect attractant. Also this strip is accessible by all who walk by on the side walk. |

It's called a boulevard and it's suppose to be grass.Pull up the grass and put in a perrenial garden, lots of back breaking work, but I've seen them done where I live. It is odd to see a street in my town where there are no boulevards. Mine have 80 foot tall trees growing in them. Elms to be exact. |

It looks like there's some clover growing up in the yard. Any chance of just seeding it heavily with that? Around here it usually sprawls before it gets more than 8 inches tall and it would be good for your other plants to attract bees and butterflies. You wouldn't have to mow it religiously if you didn't want to. Or something like strawberries might be nice there. I guess that would depend on the dog, bike, and people traffic along there. |

I have the same sort of thing on 2 sides of my yard as i live on a corner and also hate mowing and edging and weed eating the darn thing. Its a pain in the butt as its a about 260ft long and about 36 inches wide. I am thinking of red lava rock and of creeping phloxs(sp). Its seem to be low matainence and a great splash of color in the spring. This year i grew squash out there in a few spots because i found them to be pretty plants that produce as a side benifit. They have nice big yellow flowers all summer and are a tought plant for the most part. They can get big but stay short enought to have good visibility of the street and black beauty Zuchinni have a very pretty leaves. HTH |

Originally I got an OK to plant the strip from the Town Administrator over the phone. Some other town official drove by and did not like what he saw. The verbal OK did not stand up. Town has been threatening me for a few years now to get the plants out and return the strip to grass. They say they are going to use the DPW to undo what I have done and put a lien on my house for the cost. Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
