Fig almost ripe if not already. Hubby tasted one, says it's good. Ugh, I'm so not into fruits so we'll have to rely on hubbies word. These figs stay green/yellow when ripe. last year we didn't pick 'em in time 'cause we were waiting for them to "ripen"/change color. They'll have to turn a bit yellow for them to be ripe.

Will add detailed info./update about this tree soon.

I'd love to taste one! Mine stay green all the time, but they should change color to dark purply brown. I've not gotten a fig off mine ever, and I've had it for years, but then again, we have had a drought for the last three years, so there you go!

I read some fig trees are self pollinators but some trees need the fig wasp for pollination. Know what kind of tree you have witt?

I'm not sure anymore, but I think it was the turkey fig.
I get figs on the bush, but they never ripen and eventually in the heat of summer drop off.

I read about the turkey fig yesterday. Many are having the same problem with the turkey fig tree but some say it depends on the cultivar. Some say you need all day sun so the fruit doesn't fall off and some insist they have all day sun but fruit still falls off. Can't transplant a young fig tree. In hot areas you can't see a certain type of disease the fig can get. You can't water them daily (I agree with this) but then again as you say drought can 'cause the fruit to fall. Some say just get rid of the tree. Yeah right, I would never get rid of it the leaves are beautiful! So much info. about why the fruit falls off before it ripens. I guess there is a different reason in different areas.

The info., from the tag, for my tree.

Fig 'Kadota'

'Kadota' is a medium-sizedfig with light yellow skin. The flesh is rich, sweet and golden. Fruit ripens from August through November. This variety needs approx. 100 chilling hours.

Planting Guide

Planting: Dig hole 3 times as wide and as deep as container. Mix equal parts organic soil conditioner and native soil. Place plant in hole so top of rootball is equal to or slightly above ground. Backfill around plant with soil mixture. Apply root stimulator. Drive tree fertillizer spikes into ground around tree. Water and apply 2" layer of mulch around plant.

Exposure: Full Sun

Spacing: 10' - 15' apart

Average HxW: 12'-15' x 15'

Fertilizing: In Spring just before new growth emerges.

Cold Hardiness 5-30 F

Water: Keep moist until well established, then water regularly as needed.

Orange County Nursery, Inc.

We have spriklers under each tree but the head is a "mushroom" head. Soaks the tree well, deep and evenly. Other "heads" don't work for us as well because we live in a windy area. I read once, watering with a hose is best for fruit trees but I think the "mushroom" head does great.

Mom said it is yummy.

You know I said "almost ripe" in the previous post but the fruit looks a lot like the figs in the picture on the tag. Anyway, the figs on the tree are not as yellow as this one yet.
