This was at the festival this past weekend. I thought it looked interesting so I took the pic. I was saying to the hubby, Ive seen this but dont know what it is. Well, this lady says to me, that is a cinnamon fern tree. I just agreed because I didn't know. BUT, at the sametime I knew my GG pals could give me the precise description.

The lady was mistken (or had been mislead by some smarmy know-it-all). This is sumac--not poison sumac, but scarlet sumac. The berries will turn rust-colored by August, and they can be used to make a sort of pioneer lemonade and used in jellies--but the red hairs on the fruit have to be removed (I forget how I did it the one time I used some). Turns a nice red in fall, but very invasive as they send up a multitude of sprouts from the roots, forming a thick stand. Most that I see are 10-12 foot tall. Keep your eyes open as you are driving along highways--now that they've caught your eye, you'll be surprised how many you'll see.

We call it staghorn sumac around here. I think it's very pretty growing in the wild, but not what I'd want in my fern garden LOL!

I think this fall I'm going to put some of the berries in the dehydrator and grind them, see if I can get something similar to that sour red sumac powder they use in Lebanese recipes.
