I am starting a container garden in several areas (around the pool, in large wooden boxes and several different sized pots. My question is when you read about different plants they say things like "can be grown in a small pot" -OR- remember this one will require a large container.. Could someone please help define small..medium.. and larger when talking about containers, pots, tubs, etc. Also when reading about the containers,I read an 8" pot is perfect for this plant. Is that referring to the diameter of the pot -OR-the pot depth??? Please help.. I am quit confused..Thanks in advance Georgia in southern california..

Hi there.......going to try and answer this in "my container knowledge" (which isn't all that much! Anyway.....I would suspect that when they say 8 inch pot.......they are referring to width of pot....?? But then again....that is just what I would think...I think the best way to know about size of container is to think in size of the full grown plant.....if you really want a full look....you plant lots.....I don't like it so full that you can appreciate each plant....that is all up to your taste...so trial and error is your best bet.....been doing it for several years and learning as I go....Good luck with your containers....I am sure they will be nice! ps...I will add a photo of a container combination I have used several years now.....Cream can and seperator.....painted white...(needs it again)

Every one's idea of small/med & large are different. You have to consider what the mature size of the plant will be. To me, on a norm-small is 4-6" diameter pot-med is 8-12 inches and large 14-18 and then you get into REALLY LARGE. For comparison-I have a hibiscus about 3 1/2 feet tall in a 16 inch pot and it is really too small. If you are going to be planting blooming annuals, I wouldn't consider anything smaller than 14 inches. If it is a small perennial/shrub-16-18 inches. If its one plant per container-depending on what it is, I would say 8 inches or more.
