I'm just wondering, how many of you start your plants, veggie or flowers, from seed or do you buy your plants at a local green house? Or do you order from catalogs. 95% of mine are from plants from local greenhouses/garden centers. |

Seeds 40%, plants 30%, catalogs 5% (have to really want it) and freebies from friends and neighbors 25% (somtimes more!). |

I'd guess that I'm 90% plants. I just do seeds if I get some freebies, but I rarely go out and buy them although I really wanted to find some zinnia seeds last week. No luck. Can't find the dang plants! |

Almost 100% of my veggies are from seed, even the tomatoes and peppers. I like the open pollinated varieties from which I can save my own seed. I try to start most of my flowers from seeds, but do pick up a few perennials as plants (this year I got 4 flats of perennials, since the high school greenhouse was giving away everything at the end of the year). I've bought 90% of my trees as plants, but grew pawpaws from seed, along with hibiscus and rose of sharon. |

Mostly I buy from local nurseries or Walmart/Lowes. I would say maybe 15% from seed this year. Next year I am hoping for a lot more from seed. |

I am probably about 50/50 when it comes to the vegetable garden, more like 70/30 plants versus seed on flowers. At least this year. I'd like to be a seed purist with all heirloom plants but having a couple of box stores and garden centers between the house and the office sure makes it easy to go for the more instant gratification!

I will seed when possible, one packet of lettuce for $1.35 is 400-500 heads of leaf lettuce, a packet of tomato seeds is 40-50 plants sometimes a lot more, start your seeds, and don't be afraid or listen to too many horror stories about seeds starting, just sow , keep moist (not wet)and never let them dry out. the only reason to buy plants is if you don't have time to start your seed bed or pots . Although plants will get you started fast but the trade off will be the variety and often your limited to what's left. Do both Guilt Trip |

I agree with you Guilt. It is so much more economical to start from seed. Some of the prices of ANNUALS kill me. I hope to be starting a lot more from seed from now on. I find the flowers that I start from seed usually are better and heartier than store bought. |

I'm probably 80% plants, 20% seeds. My garden is kind of small, and I only need 2 or 3 tomatoes each, same with cukes and squash. I have half-used packets of seeds left every year, but I keep using them. Most of my flowers are re-seeders, so I don't use a lot of seeds. |
