I need some help...I have a large area I'd like to plant in front of our concrete front porch foundation but I also have a large (2-3') roof overhang with a steep roof pitch. I'm in a region that has the potential to get quite a bit of snowfall in the winter months. Naturally, the snow will slide off the roof. I'm worried that a big slide will break branches on ornamental trees or shrubs. What do I do about planting and covering the ugly concrete porch foundation? It's 3-3-1/2 feet from ground level. Any suggestions? |

Maybe you can espalier some plants and then they wouldn't be in the way of the snowslide. |

That's a thought that had not occurred to me. Thank you for the suggestion. |

Wow! What a great, friendly and informative site. I'm so glad I found it! I can't wait to play with it a bit, get some pictures posted and blog about how the yard at my new house is coming along. Thank you! |

Will English Ivy work? It is semi evergreen in zone 5. You could use it as a ground cover that climbs up the foundation walls and keep it trimmed so it doesn't grow onto the floor of the porch. Grows in sun or shade. You should be able to find it in plugs. Gemma

If you put in shrubs, you can cover them in winter with a wooden Tipi - they are used quite a bit here in NY - you can build your own, but I've seen them sold in hardware stores etc - I don't have a picture, but it's really just an A frame with a hinge - in summer you fold it and store it, but it protects shrubs from snow and ice coming off the eaves. |
