My children came across this huge spider in our laundry room yesterday, screaming bloody murder, when i came across it I too was freaking out. I have never seen a spider that big in central va, unless it was at the zoo. I tried googling it it kind of looks like a cross between a tarantula and a wolf spider, but not absolutely sure. I would like to know what it is, in case there are more around our home. Especially if it is a danger to my family & pets.. Ok and he is not little, i would say it is about 3-3.5" diameter. My husband has lived here all his life and he has never seen a spider that big, unless it was a pet store or zoo. Attachments: ![]() |

It sort of looks like a brown recluse, but I don't think they get that big. Be careful, though. |

My friend said that it was hard to tell from the picture for sure, but it looks like it might be from the Dolomedes sp. which is also called a fishing spider. Here's a link to wikipedia that has some good info and pictures of it and also another link with some more info. They can bite, but aren't considered dangerous. Hope this helps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_spider http://www.uky.edu/Ag/CritterFiles/casefile/spider s/fishing/pisaurid.htm There's a space after the r in spiders in the second link that needs removed to work that link. |
