Ok, first off, I'm a complete newbie in every sense of the word. I usually don't grow ANYTHING as I've never had the desire. Recently, my young toddler son became interested in trying to plant some strawberry plants. I searched high and low, of course I couldn't find any. I didn't know it was already past season...haa ha....I told you I was completely in the dark about planting. Well, I did manage to find some strawberry plants. So now I have a two-part question.... 1) The plants I did find are June Bearing. Can I put these in a container for indoors or should I try to get them into the ground for next year? If so, what is the best way to prepare them? Can somebody send me a link for instructions? I've looked and not finding exactly what I'm looking for. 2) I read somewhere about getting strawberry seeds by blending a strawberry and pouring off the 'stuff' until you just get seeds. Well, I tried this method. I didn't do the DEEP FREEZE part and failed to put them into the freezer. However, the seeds I did get, I stuck them in some peat and now I see super tiny little sprouts starting. It's only been less than a week. The tub is sitting on my kitchen sill. Did I have good beginners luck and those will sprout into plants or am I just dreaming? ![]() Thanks for any help! Any helpful links are welcomed! |

Can't help you but I like that seed idea. I think I will try the blender method too. Sounds like fun. |

Hi, I've grown them in the ground and in pots and honestly they both work well. If you have only one plant you can grow it in a hanging pot outside in full sun, keep it watered and feed weekly with a water soluble fertilizer and before it gets cold it should get some runners on it, when that happens put the baby plant in the soil 1/2 deep in pot by just looping the runner and secureing with a hair pin or plant pin, when it roots cut runner, lift carefully out of soil and plant in a dixie cup and when it gets large enough repeat the process. The best soil I've used is miracle grow potting soil with fertilizer already in it, it works great. They say to wait for 2 years to let berries develop but I'm sure your little guy will be thrilled to see them growing now, best of luck to you floridagirl. |
