I am looking for advice on pruning. Earlier this yr, I cut a long piece off, and it started to bleed. I had to cover it with wax from a candle. So I now know how to cure a cut, but when exactly does one prune. I pot on my cutting's and normally give them away after a yr or so. I have too many, but being a non drinker, I love grapes's and fruit in general. So that is why I have seven grape vines to myself. But not the space to grow them, so hence I need to know when do I cut them back......

I prune my grapes when i prune my roses in very early spring before anything is budding up. then after budding i train them the way i would lik to make them easier to harvest.

I usually prune my mom's vine in spring just after the buds start to show life. Don't be afraid to do drastic cuts of the "wild hairs" that vine all over it then or even once it's leafed out. I have to cut some of those off, too, so she can mow by it.

Have you ever made grape juice or juice and then jam or jelly? It's wonderful stuff. You can even just freeze the juice if you don't want to can it in a water bath proceedure.

I have researched this topic at length for my own purposes since I recently obtained a few VERY old concord grape vines. It is my understanding that you should prune in very early spring. This helps to avoid 'bleeding' before too much fluid has entered the vines for the spring. There are a few different methods for training i.e: two line or trellis. For space saving they say that a trellis works nicely.

Vines can be pruned heavily but remember that next years fruit comes from this years new growth. So if you prune to heavily in spring you may have little to no fruit if your not careful. Not to worry though you would most likely have plenty the following year.
