Question: How do I plant herbs rooted water? I've gotten advice from people who claim they haven't had luck, so I'd like some advice from people who have had luck lol.
Question 2: How should I plant cuttings in soil? I know it works but I don't seem to be having luck. Should I put several in one container? I can't use my rooting hormone because I ruined it.

I am on a plant ban - no store bought plants. My financial adviser said no more and since he has my money I'll be listening lol. Since my outside plants are having a bug issue I'm taking clean, bug free, cuttings from those plants and trying to start them indoors.

I put some Pineapple Sage cuttings in both water and soil, since I've heard both work well. I've read putting a bag over them, but not sealing it, helps but I'm having trouble with those. What I did was take two tupperware containers we use during summer and put then in one and set the other on top, leaving it so air can get in. Then I left them indoors, out of direct sun. So far the ones in soil died and the ones in water are all starting to root!

I made a second makeshift 'green house' for some thyme and purple sage in water since I'm scared to use soil now.

Gnome, do not be afraid. It is all trial and error. My husband roots by sticking a cutting in a mixture of sand/perlite/and seed starting mix. He puts them in a zip lock bag which he closes. Give them plenty of water. Make a hoop with a clothes hanger and put in the pot to keep the plastic from touching the plant. Place in a shady area and check every few days to make sure they have enough water.

Me---I stick cuttings directly in potting soil, keep in the shade and keep watered. Ok......I do very small cuttings of herbs and he does larger things like roses and butterfly bush. Both methods have failures and successes.

When I root in water, I let roots develope and then plant into a pot to watch for a while. I am rooting a yellow butterfly bush now in water and it seems to be doing good. The leaves are green and little hairs are coming on the stem.
Oh yeah, Wayne uses rooting hormone. I sometimes do, sometimes dont.

Dont get discouraged. It takes time to get it right. And every plant is different. There use to be a thread on here about which plants root in water. I will try to find it for you.
