I have a number of grapevines, and get more every yr after I take cutting. Being rampant grower's and filling nicely with young grapes, I am wondering when is the correct time for pruning. I normally give them away, but allway's manage to save some.lol.......... |

This is grape growing country and most of the wineries around here prune in the spring. If they grow on a wire fence system they leave two main branches extending out either side with a few bud nodes on each of them. Believe me, they will fill out over the summer. That's about how I do my mom's vine, too. If it starts getting to wild haired -so she has trouble mowing by it --I trim the new growth accordingly. It gets loaded with grapes. I hope that helps. You can use the old branches for wreathes yourself or donate them to someone who does. Our church ladies sold wreathes the past few years. One of the ladies has a pond that she soaks the stuff branches in to make them pliable again. |
