Update!
Well it looks like I didn't get all of it, some leaves are still turning yellow after all that. I keep trimming off those parts, it seems like this is going to be something I have to be stubborn about... luckily I'm good at being stubborn!

Also trying to get the bushes to not be so full, it seems that this house went uninhabited for a while, so the rose bushes along with all the other landscaping got quite out of control. So I am trying to thin them out a bit and cut away any stunted looking parts to get some of the air circulating in there. I just hope I am not damaging the plant by doing all this to it, I'm sure it has to be going through some stress with all my spirited vigilance.

Hi
I've just bought the Bayer 3-in-1 rose food and found out that it can't be used on container roses! Anyone have another favorite rose food
Thanks

You can, or at least I do for my accent roses. I just cut the dose in half. Miracle grow is another favorite.

It looks like powdery mildew and black leaf and chances are you will proberly loose ever leaf little by slow though out the summer As posted prior a product named Bayer all in one is a small step in the right direction and a fast one as well, however it isn't one I would use unless I realy realy had to Lets look at the ad for a second ONE PRODUCT THAT DOES THREE THINGS:
thats just like asking a doctor to use one pill to fix ALL THE PROBLEMS

I will try to persuade you to think in the following manner, You just moved into a new home complete with at least one rose left abanded and alone for who knows how long. Much like the home you moved into I am sure this is only one problem of many you want to solve or fix and I cant help but think you might want it to be fixed right and as read in severl postings you alrady know it may take a while. I know you dont want to loose every leaf on your rose bush now do you want to loose every rose as easy as it is to say that it might happen anyways.

Let's step back from the rose for a second shall we and lets look at a wider view of it and lets try to see what is happening underneath the rose. Yes there is a root underneath the Rose ( all palnts have em, silly me you already knew that) The better you feed the root the bigger the canes will become and a root gets it's food from the soil Bayer All In One will feed the root real fast perhaps even to fast Yep it is as close to force feeding as you can imagine.

Quick question. If you where ill with a real bad flue and a tempature of 103 would you want someone force feeding you and say you'll be better sooner if I do this.

Black spot is a very very bad flue for roses added to that a sever case of powdery mildew can't help me think that some of them sticks ( brances or canes also have some problems as well.

Odd as it is the leves would show someone just how Ill a rose can get and left unchecked can destroy the entire plant.
Yep the entire plant however it can't distroy the root A rose root will just travel untill it finds it's food IN THE SOIL for a long distance I never seen a rose root go to far or deep personaly but I am told they are able to slowly cpreep to a one mile distance in search for food and water

So lets walk into the kitchen sink and lets grab a gallon cool tap water ( if you have a water filer even better )while we're at the sink lets grab a hold of that bottle of Dawn concentrated dish soap and put some of that into the gallon jug of water ( Dawn you ask ? Yep a few million water birds at the Exxon valdez oil spill fly today because of Dawn Dish soap Them water birds can't be wrong)

Yeah I see them cabinets around the kitchen but which one has the baking soda let's go ahead and add a table spoon of that to the gallon of water.

Yeah I know I am a tad long winded here and we are going back to the rose now
and as mentioned befor even in other postings you keep having to pluck leaves and I too admit that you may even loose em all we're again going to plck off more now but let's use caution too there right we need to dispose of them as soon as we can so shall we back up and perhaps bring two (2) empty ceral bowls too.

Phew we're finaly back at the rose plant with one capped Gallon of mixed water and the 2 empty ceral bowls lets uncap the water mix and pour in some of the water mix to about half full in one of the bowls and place it where we can not spill it and somewhere near the rose where we can see it As we pluck the black, yellower leaves lets toss em in the bowl as we go and let's get as many as we can ( ALL )off the ground.

You can make small piles as you hand scrape them from under the rose and as well keep em AWAY from the rose bush and other flowering plants as well if all of them fit in the bowl with the pulled leaves thats ok too in a nut shell if it where me doing it I'd perhaps start at the top and work down or bottom down it doesn't matter

The Key Colors to me here are: black, yellow and any shade of stained hues that look odd. I have Tea Roses and Climbers Floribundas Carpets and the one very new to my garden mini I can only guess at this but if I have to the new leafs on your rose start as deep brown turning redish befor they turn lite green and darken after that.

At any rate you do want to remove the sicker leaves and maybe, just maybe them newer leaves may grow in nice and healthy

( Opps you are also growing leaves too?!, so thats roots, canes (AKA: branches, stems)leaves and a rose) thats 4 things now!!!! off of one plant!! (Natures talking to you here)

I know I know that bowl of very ill leaves isn't going to get any fuller weren't we silly to not notice that we should dump it in to a plastic bag ( Yeah I know there in the kitchen too, while your in there grab a quick cold water bottle or glass for you'r self. By now you proberly need it too)

Ahhhhh that was soooooooooooooooooooo good All them very ill leaves are gone and all you got for this effort was a nice cool drink of water but as you may recall theres still an empty bowl and a jug of water mix and some newer leaves that still have a chance to grow out nicely just waiting for you to help them beat the odds

Perhaps it is also a good time to bring with you a hand trowel ( A small hand shovel shaped garden tool used to dig small holes and scrap soil)and a garden fork

Back at the plant Step Two:
Pour some water mix in to the remaining bowl holding it in one hand and useing it as a finger dipper dip two fingers in to the bowl and bring as much watering mix to each leaf and finger rub untill wet each remaing leaf if you see black spots on canes and there less then the size of the wide part of a needle go ahead and give em a rubbing too Black cane is a different and very serius problem for roses that requires a complete removal of cane IE: cutting of cane removal and burning or proper dumping ( and yes the root still lives on)

You've finished hand rubbing what few leaves you have that also includes the nice big ones that still look nice enough to grow you will also want to repeat this step every two or three days and I say three because it might be raining on the second day and you didn't do it on day 2 this will continue for at least a month or longer but I will now help you take yet again anouther short cut and address a soil issue that is also a culprit and assitant to that black spot and powdery mildew

Use the hand shovel and hand rake and scrap the soil away from the entire base
of the rose(s) get right in there to the main stalk even if you must ( AND YOU NEED TO ) loose the mulch in the very same manner as you did with the leaves as well ( Yeah I know I sence a heart attack here or perhaps a small case of shock) I will insist on you also removing and disposing of about two inches of soil from the entire plant and oddly enough ( getting back to mother nature talking to us here ) also remove the same two inches or so of soil four feet around the entire rose.

Back to them canes for a fast chit chat. If you do have to cut canes do so at a 45% angle use elmers glue to seal the small hole. Why do that you ask Theres a very small green bee called a leaf cutter bee they can bee seen if you have em
they make fast work of leaving small and medium holes on leaves they use the leaf material to build nest and they nest in small sized holes just like the ones you left after cutting a cane so seal up any and all holes you can see.

Alot of work huh? And to think we're not done yet, I just asked you to dispose of 2 inches of soilfour feet aroung the outside of the rose some mulch a bunch of sick leaves and yes even a cane or two or even more and then ask you to repeat the leaf help every second day. I will have to ask you to do something else.

Could you tell me where you hid the compost pile?
I ask this because you may want to replace the soil we removed
I will beg you to not use mulch as nice as
