Hello, I was wondering if some of you experts can help out a newbie rose gardener.
My husband and I just moved into our new house which can already landscaped with large beautiful hot pink tea (my guess) roses in the front yard.

They had a lot of parts where the old petals had blown off by the wind so I pruned those down some. While pruning, I noticed one bush had some yellow leaves in the lower part of the plant and toward the interior of the bush.

The next weekend I bought some Bayer All In One fertilizer that said it fertilizes, and acts as an insecticide and fungicide. After using that on the rose bushes, I noticed even more yellow leaves on bushes that did not have it before!

I'm really sad about it, because I was excited about rose gardening being my new hobby... I hope I haven't ruined them!
Can anyone tell me what this is? (photos included)

The sprinklers water the bushes twice a week. I live in Texas so it is getting pretty hot out. The yellow leaves are always toward the lower part of the plant and more toward the interior.

Welcome to the wonderful world of roses! Allow me to be your tour guide.

It looks like you have a good old fashioned case of black spot. Black spot is the bane of all rose growers. Blalck spot is also very contagious. If one gets it, the all will.

The Bayer product is a good one, I use it myself. You will need to do all of your roses though.

Remove ALL the infected leaves on ALL of the roses, and off the ground. This is Very important. Dispose of this in the trash, not in a compost pile or on the ground else where. Treat all of your roses with the Bayer product. Follow the instructions for re-treating. Black spot can take a season or 2 to clear up.

How and when you water will also have an effect. Ideally, roses should be watered in the early part of the day, at ground level. If it is early in the day you can water from above, as the leaves will be dry before night fall. Being to damp or overly humid will act as a petrie dish for bacteria.

Make sure is is enough air circulation around your roses also. This helps in keeping them dry. Let me know how it goes.

TO ALL OF MY ORGANIC FRIENDS: I APOLOGIZE, BUT I DO RECOMMEND A PRODUCT IF I HAVE SEEN PROVEN RESULTS. I still love and respect all of you.

Hope this helps

Thank you so much for your help!
I will get right on clipping out the infected pieces and tossing them.

Well I have done my best to remove all the diseased parts. Some of the bushes had a ton of disease parts and are looking quite lopsided now that I cut it all off. I'm hoping I didn't over do it, but I was just trying to get rid of all the bad parts. I hope some healthy branches grow back in!

I gave them a dose of the Bayer too.

Thanks so much for the advice, lets cross our fingers and hope it keeps this black spot at bay!

They will grow back. It's just really important to get all the infected parts. Kind of like not taking all the antibiotic for an infection...it will just come back. I know it isn't an attractive looking plant with no leaves, but in the long run you are saving your plants health by doing it all now. An infected plant is a weak plant and......... Let me know how it's going.

Hmmm, looks like my roses have it too. Didn't know what it was. Sucks that it takes so long to clear up but I guess I should start now or the problem will only get worse.

I saw you mentioned bayer - but not sure if that's the name of the manufacturer ( like aspirin) or what the product is. I think I was told to use horticultural oil - and spray the heck out of it. Get rid of all the yellow/diseased items, get them off the ground and into the garbage can, spray it once a week for 2 weeks. What is bayer? thanks. Judy

The name brand of the product Bayer all in one rose and flower care. You mix it with water, like a plant food ( which partly it is, and waterd the plant. Instead of sprays which can wash off with rain or water, or could burn if applied in full hot sun.
