This is my first time doing something like this hope more experienced people will reply.

Here is how I ended up using perlite and potting soil.

A few days ago I was reading about "how to make your own potting soil for succulents". I read this before I got the tank. I wanted to transplant my succulent and cactus.

I did not have the ingredients but did have the substitute but mixed together "perlite" and "potting soil" left over from my Plumeria project... minus the pea gravel recommended for the top layer for plumeria. I decided this is what I'll use for my succulent when I transplant.

Anyway to the point, no matter what we do drainage will be an issue in this case. Most of the house plants, succulents, cactus I planted in the tank don't like too much water so I figured I should use what succulents like and what I have. I was going to use it for the transplant anyway.

Again, i have been only misting the plants and used soil which I feel is best for them. The top of the tank is not covered. I think if it is covered, it will not be such a great idea to use perlite.

My suggestion? Practice with cheap/smaller plants and test everything but read up on the plants you want to use first then decide on the soil. Again, only experts on the subject will answer your question best. Not me.

PS. I don't think we should use any type of soil with wood in it 'cause wood rots up pretty quick ... I'm sure i read about this also but don't remember when.

Okay so I should not say I haven't done something like this before. LOL forgot about my Tritoma seeds and forgot about the 2 gallon fish tank I used.

Growing seeds in fish tanks.... It works great, this I know for sure!

PS. grow light included.

Yep fairygarden it is. after my beta died i used it to grow my tritoma. Even the rocks are fish rocks.

these seedling grew faster than the ones I did not put in the tank.

My brother told me I should add a venus fly trap or a pitcher plant in the tank. Not a bad idea considering the main thing I'm worried about is flies.

What do you all think? Ya think a carnivorous plant would live in it?

You are right fairygarden, might as well add a couple of the plants...it's not like I know what will happen to the others I've planted. I guess the "carnivorous" part threw me off.

Carnivorous plants like it moist. Will that go with what else you have in there?
