I have a few leyland cypress trees (approx 10 ft tall each) in a staggered row by the fance. Two (next to each other) appear to be yellowing and I believe they have canker. The yellowing branches are too many to be cut off. If I did cut them I'd be left with just the trunk of the trees!! will the trees recover on their own?? Or will they eventually be lost?

Well...ok..not too many gardeners know how to solve leyland cypress canker it seems! I called the local extension office and they rec. cutting off all the yellowing branches. after each cut to dip my shears in bleach solution. So I cut off some of the really bad ones (because the whole tree is yellowing) but it doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I guess the tress will have to rally on their own if they are to survive. Just hoping the canker doesn't jump to my healthy leylands! I'm tired of worrying...

From my observations, when Leylands get problems like that (be it canker or phytopthora or bagworm), the problem can spread quickly. I'd highly recommend removing the affected Leylands completely and disposing of them. I'd also recommend planting unrelated, non-conifer shrubs or small trees between the remaining Leylands, if you want to keep them |
