Hi, I'm brand new to this site, but I am having an awful time with my basil seedlings. They have their second set of leaves, but something is stripping the leaves right off of the stems. What could do this? It happens within a 24 hour period. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. P.S. I posted this in another forum, being new, and I now realize that it should have been in this category. Sorry. I was "desperate" this morning to find some way to save my basil. Thanks. |

If you're talking about seedlings, it could be anything. Slugs, snails, crickets. The leaves are so small and tender, these varmints could devour them overnight and leave little evidence. |

Wow, I never thought of snails and slugs. So would this happen in the night time? Or would they do this during the daylight hours, so I could spot the little culprits? Should I keep the seedlings inside till they are bigger? I'm desperate to save this basil. I love making pesto and freezing it, so I need a lot of plants. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks. |

They come out at night and will pretty much eat everything! Get some slug bait and sprinkle it around. They'll go for the bait and leave your basil alone. I sure wish I knew that you needed basil. I think every seed that I planted came up. I have more basil than I know what to do with. |

Thank you for the info. So "where" do you get slug bait? And what is it? I have probably 100 plants that came up. And I still want to plant Genevese in the garden. Would it help if I still bring the flats into the house at night? Would that work? At least until they are bigger? Thanks. |

Yes, of course you can bring them in at night. You should be able to get snail and slug bait from any place that you get garden supplies. For some reason, here where I live, it has been hard to come by this season. It's just a powder, like sawdust, or pellets that the slugs eat and it destroys them. It's safe for kids and pets. |
