I'm pretty happy and thought i'd share my little triumph. My basil plant was growing very well but getting top heavy as it was growing quite tall, so I decided to try something out. I took 5 cuttings from the plant, all in different ways trying to see which works best. I am happy to announce that all 5 cuttings are rooting in water and only after 1 week. Not only that, on the original plant, everywhere that I took a cutting from is growing leaves. Success, I'd say. We'll see how it turns out in the next week or two! |

Hooray! That's exactly what you're supposed to do. The more you cut, the more it produces. It also keeps it from bolting. It's a great way to keep your basil going all summer long. Cut and root, plant it out. Then cut and root, etc. That way you get to use your basil with wild abandon! |

Hi, I was wondering how you took your cuttings and did you put them in plain water? Thanks! |

I just cut off a stem 3 or 4 inches long. Strip off the bottom leaves and put it in water on my kitchen window sill. After a week or so, it roots. Very easy. Just like a coleus. |

^^^^^What he said^^^^^ LOL - My original plant was getting too tall so I just lopped off the tops, stripped the bottom leafs and stuck it in water. My original plant is filling out again and after about a week (or less) the cuttings were rooting. They're in pots already and growing very well at the moment. I had the cuttings in a pint glass of regular tap water in my home office, which made my office smell wonderful by the way. Give it a try, very easy and no fuss. Good luck!

Isn't is exciting? That is one of the many reasons why I love growing basil. The more you use it, the more it gives you to use! |

Isn't that the truth! I wish that all plants were like the basil. It is a truly wonderful herb. You can just brush past it, and it explodes into fragrance. Welcome, BasilLover, to Garden Guides! |
