I was just curious if anyone has any experience with hatching mantis egg sacs for use in their garden. ' Mantises are very helpful at eliminating some of those unwanted garden guests and I have been thinking about ordering an egg sac to raise some of my own little green garden guardians! |

I too had thoughts of finding mantis eggs. That is until I found out they are the only predator of the precious hummingbird. I found a video that almost made me sick. The mantis lays in wait to catch a full grown hummer and eats it. Really gross. So that took care of my desire for mantis in my garden. If you think you can stand it here is an article and a couple of photos. http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/backyardbir ds/hummingbirds/mantis-hummer.aspx |

I have accidently hatched mantis. As a kid, I brought 2 mantis into the house to keep them from freezing in the winter (I lived in PA). In the spring they mated and the female laid an egg case. Later the babies hatched. They were so tiny, you could barely see them. The mantis that Yardgranny6 was talking about is a South American mantis, not the variety that is sold for pest control. No need to worry, they will not eat birds! Esta |
