Can anyone tell me how to get cucumbers to climb? I'd appreciate the information. I am thinking the trellis needs to be on a slant? Help please!!

Training cukes to climb isn't hard i wrap the tentacles ( not sure if thats the correct name )around wires on the fence and they fasten them self. The tentacles are the long skinny things that make a circle on the end from the stems of the cuke. be careful they are tinder just hook them don't try to unwrap.

That's similar to what I do, wolf. I make a trellis from string and two steel posts. When the ends grow I just "weave" the ends up through the string. Eventually they will reach the top and flop over but by then you're picking perfect, green cukes.

I don't know how much room you have, but this is what I do: I plant 2-3 cukes in an 8X8ft. area. I make a fence using 4 ft. tall steel posts that I just hammer in the ground, I have some hog wire I fasten to the posts with tie wraps, and the cukes seem to 'search' for something to attach to. If they want to go in a different direction, use bread ties or garbage bag ties and gently tie to the fence; they'll attach themselves. You can make a fence using just about anything, just make sure it will be sturdy enough to support heavy cukes!

Last year I used a pcs of concrete wire mesh, counting 11 squares, cutting and using plastic snap ties I made a 24" round and 6' tall wire cage, I use them for Tomatoes, Cuks, pole beans and peppers, the eleven squares gives me room to reach through and pick,

We use wiring much like GT's but not in the round. Ours is straight in the garden row with pieces of rebar to stabilize. I plant my seed very close to the trellis, staggered on alternating sides...maybe 2 inches away. The tendrils pretty much just attach to the structure and climb. A stray will go wandering here and there but I don't worry about it at all.

Thanks Guiltrip, your cukes look great. I used concrete wire 2 years ago but they just didn't seem to want to go up. I will probably try it again this year though. Last year I didn't have any luck with cukes at all. Going back to the Armenian cukes this year. They taste so good. and make great freezer pickles.

Thanks to all of you. I didn't mean to ignore anyone. I have plenty of room in my garden for a trellis and i have plotted out my garden to get the most bang for the buck I hope. One thing I'm not real happy about is the fact that the farmer is planting soy beans around us this year so I will have a bumper crop of japanese beetles too.
