My husband arrived home with two bunches of tulips. Both were tightly closed. I split them into two bunches, cut the stems off at an angle, put a shiny copper penny and some water into two tall, slim vases and watched them come into bloom. Well, the ones on the coffee table (they were red)are gorgeous. Tall, sturdy stems - lovely blooms. The ones on the kitchen counter (pale yellow)all flopped over! I've cut them multi times now, trying to get them short enough that they will stand up. Not having much luck. So, what's with the tulips? Why aren't they happy????? I want happy tulips!!!!

I don't know why the yellow ones didn't have strong stems, but what I finally found (and bought) from a local nursery is a wire cage that you place over the top of your vase - ever have only a few stems to put in a vase and they just sit there hanging off to the side? This wire cage supports each stem so you don't need to fill the entire vase to enjoy the flowers. Such a thing probably would support the weak stems - I'll try to post a picture in case you've never seen what I'm talking about... |

The stems on these azalea blooms weren't long enough to hit the bottom, so the blooms would have otherwise just bunched at the top... Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

If you have any type of skinny tape you can make a grid across the top, too. It will work the same way. Just be careful if you get the tape wet because as you know some will just fall off.

Thank you for the suggestions. I most certainly will give them a try. I finally threw out my mother's day tulips today. The blooms on both the red and the pale yellow both lasted till today - the poor yellow ones had ten inch stems in a very short vase by the time they reached their end though. Those red ones were really tall and straight throughout. Go figure? |
