What should I have done in the fall? My Ebb Tide is dead. Cecil Brunner climber seemed to be dead last spring and early summer, then started growing in late summer, but didn't do much and didn't bloom. I'm planting more roses, but maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Are they planted in enough sun? 5 hours/day? I didn't do much with my roses last fall except pile some dirt around the graft ball - they all survived but I was worried about my Honey Dijon... Hope yours comes through! If you buy more, talk to local nurseries about hardy roses - some are more sensitive than others - I lost two Barbra Streisand roses so finally gave up on her...

Yes, they get lots of sun. In fact, I have a problem finding any shade in my yard.

You want to make sure they get enough water, and roses are heavy feeders.
I live in zone 5 with Lake Michigan to screw up the weather, I pile dirt and cover with leaves in fall. I don't do any fall pruning, I wait until I see the new growth in spring. How far down did you prune yours and when? What kind of wnter protection did you give them?

I didn't protect them and I didn't prune. My daughter has two that she doesn't cover and they always survive. Anyway, you pile the dirt up and do you use chicken wire to keep the leaves from blowing away?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I use the dirt from my containers in fall and just use the leaves I rake from the yard, I don't put anything over the leaves, after the first rain (or snow) the really don't go anywhere....

When did you plant your roses? were they bare root or container grown? How did you plant them? and Can you post some pictures?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but getting the answers may help in determining(sp?) what went wrong and how to keep your new roses from the same fate..

I usually buy bare root, but my Cecil Brunner climber was in a pot. You don't want photos really and I'd be so embarrassed! The Ebb Tide was so tiny when I planted it; I don't think you can see anything now. The Gene Boerner was planted a couple of weeks ago and Mr. Lincoln was going to get planted today, but it's raining. I think my little Iceberg that I planted last spring is alive. I might be able to take a picture of the climber next week. I'm trying to get ready for a yard sale. I appreciate your help.

Make sure you hole is big enough to allow room to grow ( i go at least 18x18 ususally 24x24 inches). Place some well aged manure in the bottom, container roses should be planted at the same depth as the pot, bare root roses I put the graft at ground level. Water them well. Let me know how it goes.
