We're in a townhouse, and have a very small area out back. I would love to compost, but not sure how with people all around us, and not much room?

Sorry this took so long for someone to answer. I was hoping one of our more avid composters would jump in. I was reading a new book this week, and the author (apartment dweller) Set us a vermiposter tub in a closet.

This is really nothing more that a large storage bin, add some organics and redworms, and poof. There are several good articles, you could probably find them in your local paper's archives on line (the home and garden section) or try this link http://www.ecowatchohio.org/pubs/junjul08/composti ngwith.htm.

Hope this helps and good luck

http://www.compost-bin.org/bokashi-kitchen-compost er/
here is a kitchen composter and it works quite well.
To be honest with you everything with this ststem can be made urself, thought the cost is not too bad.
The wife and i made a composter bucket with a 5 gal bucket and cut the bottom from another bucket, drilled holes for drain and set the bottom of on bucket in the other leaving an air gap in the bottom.
the bokashi you can make yourself also with a few ingredients.
the best part of this system is there is practically nothing u cant compost with it, and the smell is like sweet vinegar.
I suggest farther research to see if you would preffer to do this urself

I think vermicomposting would be great for apartment or condo dwellers. I have a Worm Factory that has a 2'x2' footprint and you can expand them vertically by adding trays. I keep mine in the garage and it doesn't smell. I got mine here if you want to check it out. http://www.urbangardensolutions.com/Worm-Factory-C ompost-Bin-Vermicomposter-p/ds3p.htm I would think you could just put it out on your patio or balcony if you have one. Good Luck!

Costco was selling an electric composter super cheap earlier this month. It is meant for apartment dwellers. Apparently no smell and super quite.
I think this is what they had. http://www.naturemill.com/
