Saturday I went to a local nursery just to nose. Didn't expect to buy anything. I found 3 ferns in the dollar bin. I didn't see anything wrong except they weren't as developed as the others at full price. Took them home and planted them. It's been raining ever since so they sould be happy. Also got a hydrangia and a honeysuckle vine for $3 each. Will put them in as soon as it clears up.. Rain forcast for the next 5 days. I alway check out our Lowes every week for their mark downs. I have found some great buys over the years.

Good for you! I haven't seen anything on sale around here so far. Do you have any idea of what kind of ferns they are?

I think 2 are ostrich ferns, the other one is something more delicate. I don't care I just love ferns and I have a low shadey area that I am trying to fill with hostas and ferns. It's kind of my rain garden. Right now it's all most a wading pool. I have had about 3 inches of rain since Sunday and more expected. Lowes is where I usually find my good deals. I bought 6 packs of pansys for 25 cents. Got 4 dianthis( can't spell) for 50 Cents apiece.

Ostrich ferns get nice and big, so they should be good for filling your area. Their fiddleheads are also supposed to be very tasty sauteed. I've never tried them myself, but I would like to.

I know you can eat them but they are too pretty to eat. I checked them when I got home and they are all three growing.

I have found some good end of season deals at Lowes as well. Some do well and some do not. Last year I got two butterfly bushes for $3 each. This past season one got 5 feet tall with foot long blooms. The other was nearly dead but ended up getting several inches tall and I suspect will do fine, just took a while to get established.
