Hi, I had some beautiful iris that was white with purple/blue edges in my garden. I really loved them. Then after about 2 years they changed color and now are a very dirty yellow with brownish black edges. Does anyone know why?I do have some other iris planted about 20 feet away, the package showed a beautiful photo and said that they were black iris. Could this be the cause of my trouble? I split and moved some of my (used to be pretty) iris to the side of the house. Now 2 of the plants are flowering with the pretty colors and the others are the ugly ones! Can anyone help me? Is there anyway to get them to change back????? Help, Lu I have added a photo of the flowers here for all to see! Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

Not that I KNOW - but what I can imagine is that, depending on how your pretty iris was created, it may be reverting back to a base color. With annuals, that happens when new seeds are produced thoug. So could the new color be coming from new corms? New colors can come from cross -pollination, again common with annuals, but I doubt your iris 'reseeded'. Perhaps someone with more plant breeding smarts will stop by.... |

I asked this very same question last year. I had a salmon colored one pop up. So far I haven't seen it this year, but this year I had these purply one pop up in a bed of blue. There are yellow ones nearby about ten feet away. Evidently, they are cross-pollinating somehow. I have another picture that shows this better, but I'll have to find it. Attachments: ![]() |

Here it is. These iris were nothing but blue, but a couple of years ago I put in the yellows and this is what came up this year. It wasn't like this at all last year. Attachments: ![]() |

I am sooooo happy to know I am not the only one who has had iris change color! I planted a bunch of blue iris one year (only color and time I have ever planted iris) and this year they bloomed yellow and white! |

Found an answer for us that love this flower. Here is the website. Lots of good infor there. http://www.candtirispatch.com/faq.php#faq_color Why do iris change color? If your iris are blooming a different color than originally purchased, it is because of letting your iris go to seed: the bloom stalk was not removed shortly after blooming. Bees do a wonderful job of pollinating different colors for the following year. The dominant color of iris is purple and will take over if the bloom stalk is not removed shortly after the bloom dries up. Chemical damage, overcrowding, and heat stress can be a factor in some color changes. |

Yep, I'm guilty of letting it go to seed.

That is very interesting I never knew they would do that either. My Iris are just now starting to bloom. I will have to watch that bloom stock. RR |

Since I am a plucker when the bloom is gone I have never had iris reseed or change color. I just do not like the way they look after blooming. I will be cutting down the bloom stalks this coming week as the iris are about finished for the season. |
