I would think that you could plant herbs in almost anything, with or without the label. I do all my herbs outside, so I'm not much help with your container question.

Let us know how it works. If it does, post a picture.

I've used soda bottles and different sized plastic cups. All have worked well for sprouting veggie seeds. Bigger seeds, like those of a mango, I do in nursery potts. You need to provide drainage though or a slight overwatering can kill your seedlings. I take a small knife and poke four large holes in the bottom. The cool thing is, when you water, you can see how much water you need since it's transparent.

The soda bottle I cut in half before using as well.

Also, keep in mind that I never planned for the bottles or cups to be their permanent home, just to start them. I would imagine that there isn't enough space for a plant to grow to full size.

if the bottles are clear the sun will burn the roots of your plants and kill them, so you should cover the bottles with paper or paint them to keep out the sun on the roots, I use the plastic coffee canisters for my planters, just drill a few holes and plant they also make great topsy turvie planters for tomaotes.
