I have one that keeps popping up about 3 feet from my chain link fence. Anyone know how I can either move it or train it to climb the fence? It's a very young plant only 3 or 4 shoots pop up every year.

Blackberry plants sucker from underground. I dug up some earlier this year and keep finding new ones popping up where I don't want them. You'll have to dig deep to get the roots out if you want to remove it. If you want to train it, simply purchase some garden twine and tie it along the fence. If it's far from the fence, provide a bridge with bamboo.

Blackberries are easy to grow. If the branch is long enough, you can plant the end of the branch close to the fence. The end will take root and you will have a new plant. Keep moist until roots have grown. Once established, you can cut the branch any length you want. If you want to get rid of the orginal plant just dig it out. Sometimes you can plant it along the fence, but in the fall. When branches are more than 30 inches, cut the end off. This will encourage more branches for next year. If the branch has had berries this year, remove the whole thing. It will not bear fruit next year.

Thanks for the info... I think I might have killed it, but it's only been in the ground one day. I'm so impatient I get tired of seeing nothing but white all winter that when the weather warms up I can't wait to get outside to do some gardening. Usually clean up takes about 3 to 4 weekends of hard work before I can do anything fun.
