I had to make a delivery today because it was on my way to an appointment.
When I drove up to the curb I was amazed at all the colors - especially all the different greens. I walked up the driveway and noticed all the leaf lettuce that lined both sides. Then there was the strawberries along the walkway all in full bloom. She also had cabbage, tomatoes, a lot of herbs, squash, peas, green beans - many many more things - all in the front yard......... so neat.
I really was impressed with this gardening style and told this 78 year old woman. Hopefully she will join this group, but she doesn't really do computers - but I told her I would help. I even got to see the backyard and all I can say is WOW! She has a maze of corn about 3 feet tall with more green beans growing along the stauks. Watermelons are ready to be picked - I took one home. (I didn't have my camera with me but you guys would be amazed on how beautiful her yards look and everything is edible.)

Do any of you garden like this?

The elderly know just how to do it all. I really admire them. Can you go back and ask to take a picture for me.....LOL My granny gardened up till she was about 98...it wasn't that much like she use to do. I think she last had a little onions, tomatoes ...don't think I will be around that long. She died at 100 1/2yrs.old. She fall in church, hit her head and got a blood clot on her brain. God Bless her Soul... she was one in a million....waiting for you to return to visit the little lady.... Are you back yet??? if it wasn't so far I would go myself....LOL. Thanks so much for sharing... reba

I mix my edibles in with my flowers but I don't go solely one way or the other.

I have truly found a new (old) friend.....
I took my laptop over to her house so that she could see this site for herself.
She had greens/onions cooking on the stove and cracked corn bread WITH REAL CHURNED BUTTER!!!!! Of course I had just a little (I don't need to eat for the next two days ) I did take my camera - BUT - she wants to do it herself.
She does have a computer - but it is old, so just be patient (with me) for her.
Ms. Lilly made me pick some lettuce leafs on the way to the car (I don't know all the types) and gave me some peppers and onions.

I just love "older" people. the stories that they have to tell - if we would only listen. Ms. Lilly's attitude is - and she actually said this to me -
"If we would only worry about our yards (front, back & sides) this world would be a much better place." She doesn't read our newspaper (don't blame her there..) and she doesn't watch the news - but she said she has to watch Jeopardy, Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune everyday. She is VERY opinionated..... (it's kind of funny, so am I) and she is ALWAYS RIGHT!! She is a sharp as a tack and knows exactly how many radishes, melons, etc. she has left.

I'll work with her this weekend and have a small digital camera that I will let her use. I'm kind of disabled right now (have a leg brace on and can't sit, for long; or bend) and here she is only wearing a shift type dress picking up big piles of leaves and toting the hose everywhere. I only can pray that I can be like her - 20 years from now.

Some advice (or just a suggestion, if you will) - go find an older person and just start a conversation. Don't intrude but inquire - then listen. Believe me - today has been the very best day in my whole life - and because I have met Ms. Lilly my tomorrows will only get better.

With a name like Miss Lilly she has to be an angel. It sounds like she's of the old school, war time, victory gardeners the way she's planting. You're blessed. Keep us updated on her and her garden.

I can't wait to see her pictures. I have thought about planting that way, but don't have the guts yet. What zone are you in?

She reminds me of my grandmother who was 98 when she left us, she gardened until she had a stroke at 96, I'm the only grand child who has kept the gardening tradition going, I don't know how she did it at her age, I'm only 49 and have already started with aches and pains, god bless them. I wish I had listened a little closer, maybe I would have learned what to do about some of these aches and pains. floridagirl
