We had a large vine growing against a fence in our yard. when we took the vine down in the spring, it revealed a duck nest, full of about a 1/2 dozen eggs. When we found it, the mother duck was not there, yet now she has been sitting on the eggs for multiple days. we think this is because she feels the need to stay and protect them, because the vine that sheltered them originally is now gone. This cannot be good for her or the eggs, because she cannot leave to get food, etc. What do we do? should we build a little shelter? plant a new vine (though the process might disturb the eggs and the duck). we want to do whatever is best for the duck and her eggs. please help us and give us educated suggestions. thank you!!! |

I'm no expert on ducks, but I know that once incubation has started it must be sustained. The eggs will be harmed if they get too hot - that is why a bird turns them. If they get too cold they will be harmed - that is why she is sitting on them. She probably has a male bringing her food or maybe even swapping her places. I would leave her alone. If you feel the need to help out, maybe throw her some whole or cracked corn. |
