Hi-

I'm new to this gardening board, so hello to everyone here!

My wife and I are looking to plant a Rowan/Mountain Ash in our front yard, and in looking over the cultivars, we found that one (Sorbus aucuparia var. edulis) produces edible (or at least "more" edible) berries. That seems like a huge benefit - remembering the large number of berries the mountain ash in my childhood home produced every year.

When looking for nurseries that had them, I found tons of them for sale - in Europe and Great Britain. I found one place in Washington State that has them, I think - but they don't ship anything. But I can't find any place in the US that has them. It's surprising since an edible version of an already popular ornamental tree seems like a no-brainer to make money.

Can anyone help me? I'd love to be able to pay someone real green money for an edulis. Even seeds, if nothing else is available. Thanks!

Wow, no responses despite offering real green money! So it goes. Maybe I was cursed because I posted it on tax day?

Here is a Website that has them.

Cowboyz, I called them, and they don't have the edulis variety I'm looking for. I asked if they could get one, and they agreed to ask if I provided links to the many European nurseries that have them. I asked two other nurseries a similar question a month ago, and they couldn't get them, so I wasn't optimistic that this one could. Also a month ago, I asked some of the European nurseries for seeds myself, to no avail.

So I quickly began listing some links to send to the nursery you gave. While doing so, I happened upon a site in the US selling these trees!!

Wow. It is: http://www.forestfarm.com/product.php?id=4299

So I still sent the list to coldstream, but also told them that I was all set. So though your link was incorrect (they didn't have edulis after all), it still worked out such that I'll have my edulis tree here in a week or so!

Thanks-

Equinox, if you haven't gotten your plants yet, check out oikostreecrops.com They're in Lawton, Mi and grow two edible varieties - an american that runs 10-20 feet, and a swedish goes to 30 feet. Do the website search on sorbus and you should find them. It's a nice company, but their search engine is a challenge.

Hi there. I have 2 such trees growing in my front yard, and you are more than welcome to dig one of them up. I plated them last year, and they are around 10 feet tall. It is my opinion that this tree should be renamed "Mountain #@!$" in reflection of the fact that it smells of a dogs flatulence. VERY stinky trees-Glad i planted near the neighbors i do not care for, but having 2 of them overpowers the smell of my lilacs. This will not do for me. Hence my offer. If you would like a Mountain ash... Contact me, and maybe we can work out a time for it to be removed and rehomed. =)
Cheers,
Mike
