I started some corn inside last week, and it's growing really fast! I can't plant it for a few more weeks, so I was thinking I need to transplant it into bigger containers. Anyone have any advice about corn? I am a newbie to this whole vegetable growing thing, so I need some support!

I'd bet Guilt Trip or Witt have an answer for you.

I just read the other day that corn doesn't do well being transplanted. (I don't know if it's true) I've always just planted direct. If it is true tho I'd think if u can keep em where they are until they can be moved outside rather than doing 2 transplants might be better. If you go to this site and go down to corn it'll scare the heck out of u. http://www.soilandhealth.org/01aglibrary/010137veg .roots/010137toc.html

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks Nice Guy! Any advice is welcome! I am in over my head with the vegetable garden this year, but I figure you have to just jump right in in order to learn anything.

I'm going to plant those guys outside soon- maybe even today! I have these planters called "Earth Boxes" and I am going to put the corn in there I think.

Here are some pics of the starts in my home made paper pots:

Love the homemade paper pots! I'll have to do that next year. Can you type some directions for me on how to do it?

Isn't that a clever idea! I wish I could take credit for it! One of my gardening buddies showed me how to do it a few weeks ago.

I will make a how-to video later and post it in this forum. I'm not as clear with written directions as I am when I do a demo, so look for it tomorrow. Will that work for you?

You got it MotherGoss....Jump in and enjoy! That's what it's all about.
I just started using the paper pots this year too. By the time you are ready to plant the paper is very easy to rip which is what I do. I rip off the bottom and quite a bit of the sides so the roots can escape and plant the whole thing. Would work also if you have to move to bigger pots before planting outside. You can always make bigger paper pots from bigger cans. Please let us know how the transplants do.

I don't know about planting corn in containers and having it produce well. In an actual garden setting, one should plant at least 4 "rows" side by side for pollination. There's always a first time-Good Luck!

I'm going to plant 16 seedlings in an Earth Box. The directions say that it will work, so I'm going to try and see what happens. The website says that there has been "years of scientific research done to ensure it will work," so I am going to trust them, just this once! It never hurts to try!
