You can start with a cutting but it would take time before it was actual bonsai material. What is usually the easiest way for me to start is just to take whatever I want to bonsai and stick it in the ground and let it grow and develop more trunk girth. Although you can just stick it in a big pot to let it grow. And yes, there must be drainage holes in the bottom of the pot.

There is also a certain very porous soil you must use to bonsai. Its called Turface and you can find it at any ACE Hardware store or usually most garden stores. Bonsai is a very patient art, and I am a very impatient person, but thats is partly why Im doing this, to learn patience. But its very fun.

I honestly don't know. They were little runts trying to survive in overgrown brush at my in-laws home. I found them when I went over to help clean up the overgrowth and just couldn't resist them. I would trust you to know. You are much more of an expert in that area than I am.

Any woody type tree or shrub can be Bonsaied.

I try to find ones with an interesting shape to start with then mature them from there.

I keep mine in cheap little nursery pots until I am getting ready to actually set them up as a display. Then I go to the shallow pots. I actually get a lot of my pots from thrift stores. You can use any shallow ceramic dish and just drill a hole in the bottom with a ceramic drill bit.

The key to keeping them small is to keep the tap root trimmed off and let the fine feeder roots do the work.

As for pruning I think Ryan and Anup can explain that better than I.

Now that I look closer at those pictures, those are little Eastern Red Cedar Juniperus virginiana trees. They grow everywhere here in VA. They commonly grow to about 60 ft. tall. Neat little guys.

I guess I need to get a tree started before I have to worry about what soil and container. It's a fascinating idea. I hope that it's not too late for me to give this art a try.

This is called Chinese Jasmine. I have many of them. These are easy in cutting , trimming and shaping in compare with my others ficus bonsais. These are almost 15 years old, where as my all ficuses are atleast 22 years old. I have a unique bonsai where two diffrent types of ficuses hugging each other. It took many years to come in this position. I hope you will enjoy it.
