I'm new to this board, but am trying to design some flowers I would like to plant to put in those hanging rail containers on my deck. They are the long rectangular ones with the sheets of moss in them. My deck gets afternoon sun. I would like a mixture of color. Any suggestions? Also do you put the dirt directly in those containers or do you line them with newspaper or something first? I see you can buy new liners to go in them from year to year. Any help would be appreciated. Debbie |

I lined mine with plastic and just punched a couple tiny holes in the bottom for drainage. I found that just the coconut hair liners allow the soil to dry out to fast and I was constantly watering. Buy annuals and don't worry about over planting a little. Get some low growers and some vines for a variety of interest. Also try to buy continuous bloomers. I found that sweet potato vines do well and you can get them in a variety of colors. I usually put a spike in the center of mine too to give it a little height. |

Welcome, Debbie. That's a good idea about the plastic with holes. Be sure you check the labels that the flowers can take that afternoon sun. |

I had never thought about the plastic. That is a great idea. I can't wait to be able to plant here in Illinois. Too early yet for us. Hopefully by the end of the month or beginning of May. |

I line my hay rack window boxes with two thicknesses of landscaping cloth before I add the soil. Make sure you amend the soil you are putting in with some compost, even those water holding crystal isn't a bad idea. Pack the plants in tight, no need to be stingy. This box is in the sun until mid afternoon but gets at least 8 hours of sun. Trailing verbena, yellow million bells, miniature morning glories and a yellow daisy mum. This pic was taking early in the growing season it was so full by the end of the summer you couldn't see the box.The second one is purple nemesia, salmon geraniums and a chartruese vine that I can not for the life of me remember the name of, what I do remember is that I had to trim the vine back in July it was almost touching the ground.
