The people that lived in the house before us let their dogs tear big holes in the ground and we want to fill the holes and plant grass, since there are just patches here and there. Can anyone tell me the cheapest and eaiest way to plant grass from seed? I suppose we have to fill in the holes first but I really don't have any idea what to do next. Thanks for your help! Although I had a much bigger job, I recommend, after filling your holes. Seed Starter by Expert and then Scotts grass seed. It worked like a charm and I tried everything under the sun, so I thought. This combo was the trick for some reason. Goodluck. |

Thank you! Do you know where I can get that stuff? Can you get it at walmart do you know? We're conveniently down the street from one. |

Oooh, I see a horseshoe pit! We used to love to pitch horseshoes. We've torn ours out now, sadly, but we just can't do it anymore. |

So sorry you cant do it anymore. I barely do it, I will throw them in the plants, trees, anywhere but the box. I too have some disabilities and when I try to throw it gives me alot of hurt in my neck, so I dont do it much. Hubby is the one who thinks he is the King horseshoe player, its really sickening..lol, hes not that good. |

Ah dogs digging holes....Here's the hole we had to fill (we did all the way around the house). We laid down 4 inches of top soil after back filling, used the Scott's pre treat before laying down the grass seed(about 100 lbs.) laid straw on top of that and added water.Sprinklers were set on timers to water early in the morning. the grass came in beautifully, and this spring we've had return of most of the grass. Made sure to mix in some annual grass seed to fill in quickly while the slower growing had a chance. Big, big job. But the basement is dry now. Attachments: ![]() |

Lawn looks great. I would disagree with using annual grass seeds and be sure to use named varieties of seed as they give better long term protection for disease resistance and drought resistance. I saw a dog in the picture. If you have trouble with dog urine spots in your yard apply lime and gypsum in spring and fall. It is also a solution for salt damage from winter snow removal. If the dog is a female t ry adding Brewer's Yeast and garlic to her diet to tone down the urine. Congrats on your pretty lawn. Be sure to use winterizer fertilizer to get an early, green spring.
