I had one tree when we moved into our house (z7), and we were afraid it would break, and fall on the house, so we made the mistake of cutting the darn thing down. Now,I've got it growing all along the fence line (in the neighbor's yard, of course), and one huge bush of it suckered into my front yard (it's the mess of twigs on the left in the picture). I have to cut it down to the top of the chainlink every fall or it's 10 - 15 feet high the next summer. It's a shame it's such a pest because it looks really pretty in the fall when it's all gold and yellow. I'd like to plant red dogwood there instead if I can get rid of the darn thing. Any suggestions? Attachments: ![]() |

I would say you need to cut all those twigs close to the ground and apply a little brush killer with a paintbrush to each little stump. Given this is such an aggressive sprouter, you may need to repeat for any new sprouts but hopefully two rounds will take care of it. |

Is brush killer something you can purchase at the local nursery? |

We had 15 of those stupid things cut down on our property. Did you get the stump ground up? There is a stump killer called Tordon (not sure of spelling). Drill (if you can) down into the stumps or I suppose brushing on might work and put some down the holes. Really do your research on a replacement tree. The jugolon (sp?) or whatever the poison put out by a black walnut lives in the ground for an eternity and kills lots of types of trees. Search online for jugolon tolerant trees and ask at your nursery. Good luck. |

Sorry wrong tree. Read it too fast. The Tordon should still work though. |

We did not have the stump ground up and so far it hasn't spouted but one or two small stems, which are easily chopped off. The mess of twigs in the front yard is a good 15 to 20 ft from the original tree stump. Thanks for the advice. I will check at my local nursery. |
